Huron High School Students Create Blankets for Organ Donor Families
Students at Huron High School in New Boston, Michigan, engaged in a meaningful project this past Wednesday, crafting comfort blankets for families of organ donors. This initiative highlights the impact of organ donation and the connections forged between donors and recipients.
The Journey of Jackie Dennis
Jackie Dennis, a special education teacher at the school, shared her personal experience with organ donation. In 2020, shortly after welcoming her daughter, Dennis faced severe health issues that led to her being placed on life support. Following extensive preparation, she underwent a double lung transplant—a pioneering procedure performed by Henry Ford Health during the pandemic.
“They found someone to match, and then the surgeons did their work, and I woke up with my donor’s lungs,” Dennis recalled, expressing her gratitude for her new lease on life and the opportunity to connect with her donor’s family.
Building Relationships Through Donation
Since her surgery, Dennis has built a strong bond with the family of her lung donor. “I’m lucky enough to have such a good relationship that I can send pictures of my daughter, I can send pictures of what my students are doing and I get to show her the impact her daughter has had on me,” she shared, highlighting the emotional exchange and appreciation between donor and recipient families.
The Impact of the Blanket-Making Event
During the blanket-making event, Dennis reflected on the dual nature of organ donation, explaining that while she gained a new life, it came at a cost for another family. “It’s so important, and I don’t think that they may ever know how big an impact it is,” she emphasized. This sentiment resonates deeply as the students expressed their willingness to participate in this charitable act.
Riley Lambert, a student involved in organizing the event, expressed her admiration for Dennis, stating, “She’s a really kind person, and I’m really glad that the whole community of students has stepped up to help her out.” This community initiative not only supports donor families but also fosters empathy and understanding among the students.
A Message to Donor Families
In closing, Jackie Dennis offered a message to families who have lost loved ones through the gift of donation: “I’m lucky that I get that relationship but for those who don’t, just know that the donor is just so grateful.” This heartfelt note encapsulates the gratitude and recognition for the profound gift of life that organ donation represents.
