Remembering George Foreman: A Boxing Legend

George Foreman, the iconic heavyweight boxing champion and entrepreneur, passed away on March 21, 2025, at the age of 76. His family confirmed the news in an emotional announcement via Instagram, expressing their profound sorrow. “Our hearts are broken. With profound sorrow, we announce the passing of our beloved George Edward Foreman Sr. who peacefully departed surrounded by loved ones,” the post read.

A Life of Faith and Family

Foreman was not only a boxing champion; he was also remembered as a Devout preacher, a dedicated husband, and a loving father. His family described him as a man marked by “unwavering faith, humility, and purpose.”

Boxing Career Highlights

Born in Marshall, Texas, and raised by a single mother in Houston, Foreman’s journey to boxing legend began after dropping out of school at 15. Despite his tumultuous youth, he found his calling in the sport. At the age of 16, he picked up boxing and quickly made a name for himself.

Foreman made a historic mark on the sport by winning Olympic gold at just 19 years old. He clinched his first heavyweight championship in January 1973 after defeating Joe Frazier in a match that produced one of sports history’s most memorable calls: “Down goes Frazier! Down goes Frazier!”

The Rumble in the Jungle

One of Foreman’s most significant bouts took place in 1974 during the “Rumble in the Jungle,” where he faced off against Muhammad Ali. Reflecting on the experience in a 2016 interview with CBS Mornings, Foreman described it as “strange,” noting that he initially felt confident about winning. However, as the match progressed, he realized he was in a challenging position when Ali taunted him, saying, “That all you got, George?! Show me something!”

Despite losing that fight, Foreman and Ali developed a lasting friendship, demonstrating the respect that grew between them in the years following their historic encounter.

A Second Act and Lasting Legacy

In 1977, Foreman stepped away from boxing, becoming a preacher after experiencing a religious awakening. His return to the sport in 1987 was notable as he continued to win matches, including becoming the oldest world champion in boxing history in 1994 at the age of 45, when he knocked out Michael Moorer.

Foreman’s career concluded in 1997, but his influence extended beyond boxing. He became a boxing analyst and a successful entrepreneur, largely due to his association with the George Foreman Grill, which contributed significantly to his wealth and fame. In 2023, a biographical film about his life was released, celebrating his many achievements.

A Family Man

Foreman had a total of 12 children, including five sons, all named George Edward Foreman. This unique naming choice further emphasizes his legacy and personal connection to his family.

Remembering a Champion

The boxing community mourns the loss of a giant. WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman shared his sentiments on social media, stating, “Legendary boxing champion, life-changing preacher, husband, father, grand- and great-grandfather and the best friend you could have. His memory is now eternal, may Big George rest in peace.”

Though George Foreman has passed, his legacy in the boxing world and his contributions to society will not be forgotten.
