2023 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Inductees Announced
New Inductees
This year’s Rock & Roll Hall of Fame class includes first-time nominees such as Chubby Checker, Joe Cocker, and Bad Company. They join pop icon Cyndi Lauper, hip-hop pioneers OutKast, the rock duo The White Stripes, and grunge legends Soundgarden.
Awards and Honors
In addition to the inductees, several prestigious awards will be presented:
- Musical Influence Award: Salt-N-Pepa, the pioneering female rap group, and the late singer-songwriter Warren Zevon.
- Musical Excellence Award: The late record producer Thom Bell, pianist Nicky Hopkins, and bassist Carol Kaye.
About the Inductees
Joe Cocker, known for his iconic performance at Woodstock and his renowned cover of The Beatles’ “With a Little Help From My Friends,” was supported for induction by notable figures such as Billy Joel and Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top. Cocker’s inclusion has been long-awaited, as he expressed a desire to be honored while still able to appreciate it.
Soundgarden, featuring the late Chris Cornell, is recognized on their third nomination, following the success of fellow grunge bands Nirvana and Pearl Jam. Bad Company is celebrated for their contributions to arena rock with classic hits like “Feel Like Makin’ Love.”
Industry Awards
The Ahmet Ertegun Award will honor Lenny Waronker, a significant figure in the music industry who played a major role in the careers of artists like Prince and R.E.M.
Nominees Not Inducted
Several notable nominees were not inducted this year, including Mariah Carey, Phish, Billy Idol, Joy Division/New Order, Maná, the Black Crowes, and Oasis.
Eligibility and Voting Process
Artists must have their first commercial recordings released at least 25 years prior to being eligible for induction. The selection of inductees is made by over 1,200 artists, historians, and music industry experts, with criteria focusing on impact, longevity, innovation, and excellence in artistry.
Previous Inductees
In 2022, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame welcomed artists such as Mary J. Blige, Cher, and Ozzy Osbourne among others.
