Tony Danza Takes on Mob Boss Role in ‘Power Book III: Raising Kanan’
Veteran actor Tony Danza, known for his work in family-friendly sitcoms like “Taxi” and “Who’s the Boss?”, is embracing a new challenge in his career with his role as Stefano, a tough mob boss, in the hit series “Power Book III: Raising Kanan.”
Reimagining His Acting Persona
In an interview with CBS Mornings, Danza expressed enthusiasm for stepping outside his usual range, noting, “I get to do something that I wouldn’t usually get called for.” At 73, he appreciates the opportunity to take on roles that diverge from his established persona.
Danza praised the series’ distinct dialogue, likening it to classic gangster films. He remarked, “It’s toward the end of your career, and to get something like this — one of the great things is we shoot in New York. So I sleep in my own bed.” This connection to the story’s setting enhances his overall experience as he navigates his character’s complex themes and interactions.
Support for the Series
As the show enters its fourth season, Danza acknowledges the network’s robust support in promoting the program. “I can tell when I’m in a good one,” he stated, highlighting the network’s investment in the show’s future.
Possible Revival of ‘Who’s the Boss?’
When discussion turned to a potential revival of “Who’s the Boss?”, Danza clarified that a sequel is in consideration rather than a reboot. He envisions the series as a look into the characters’ lives 30 to 40 years later, addressing contemporary issues while retaining its comedic roots.
Giving Back Through Youth Initiatives
Beyond acting, Danza is passionate about mentoring youth through the Stars of Tomorrow Project Inc., which recently showcased talent at New York’s Triad Theater. Drawing from his upbringing in Brooklyn, he reflected on the challenges and vibrancy of life in the city during the 1950s and 60s.
Danza emphasized the importance of keeping a proactive mindset in his career, sharing, “Exercise and moisturize. And keep trying to expand.” His commitment to personal growth and learning continues to shape his artistic journey.
