Enormous Iceberg A23a May Threaten Wildlife in South Georgia
An immense iceberg, known as A23a, is currently drifting from Antarctica and is expected to reach South Georgia, a vital wildlife breeding area in the South Atlantic. This iceberg, three times the size of New York City, has raised alarms due to its potential impact on local seal and penguin populations.

Andrew Meijers, a physical oceanographer at the British Antarctic Survey, provided insights into the iceberg’s trajectory on Friday. Unlike other massive icebergs that tend to break apart, A23a appears solid as it travels through the Southern Ocean. Satellite imagery suggests the iceberg could hit the shallow continental shelf near South Georgia within two to four weeks, although its exact path remains uncertain.

Meijers described his encounter with A23a during a scientific expedition in late 2023, likening the vast wall of ice to something out of “Game of Thrones.” He explained, “It’s just like this white wall that stretches from horizon to horizon.” This iceberg is currently propelled by the Antarctic Circumpolar Current, the world’s most powerful ocean jet stream.
