Geena Davis Launches Children’s Book on Self-Acceptance
Oscar-winning actress Geena Davis is making her entry into children’s literature with her debut book titled The Girl Who Was Too Big for the Page. The book draws inspiration from her own experiences as a tall child navigating societal expectations.
A Message of Acceptance
In a recent interview on CBS Mornings, Davis shared the personal struggles she faced during her formative years. She recounted, “All I wanted to do was fit in and not stand out.” Being notably taller than her peers, she felt the pressure to conform to the norms that often sidelined those who diverged from the typical height.
Illustration and Artistry
In addition to writing, Davis took on the role of illustrator, expressing her long-standing passion for art. “I’ve always been very interested in drawing,” she explained. “I knew exactly how I wanted the character to look.” Through her illustrations, she aims to visually communicate the story’s themes of uniqueness and self-acceptance.
Inspired by Personal History
Publicly known for her roles in films such as Thelma & Louise and A League of Their Own, Davis has also experienced teasing in her youth. Recalling the mockery, she mentioned, “Boys called me Kareem Abdul-Jabbar,” referencing the retired basketball star known for his height. This experience is reflected in her book’s protagonist, a girl named Sheila, who learns to accept her stature and voice.
The Book’s Central Lesson
As Sheila grapples with concerns about her height and the implications of taking up space, she ultimately discovers the importance of self-acceptance. “It wasn’t until I was an adult and I stopped growing that I realized, you know, that it’s okay to take up this much space,” Davis shared, emphasizing the empowering message she hopes to impart to her readers.
