NASA’s SPHEREx (Spectro-Photometer for the History of the Universe, Epoch of Reionization, and Ices Explorer) mission has officially commenced its ambitious task of mapping the entire sky in 102 infrared colors. Launched in March 2025, SPHEREx is poised to revolutionize our understanding of the universe by providing an unprecedented, all-sky map that spans 450 million galaxies and over 100 million stars in the Milky Way. The mission is structured to conduct four full-sky surveys over its two-year primary mission duration, with each survey providing a comprehensive snapshot of the cosmos. SPHEREx employs advanced technology to achieve its scientific objectives. The spectrophotometer utilizes a linear variable filter to capture data across 102 infrared wavelengths simultaneously. This innovative approach enables the observatory to gather extensive spectral information without the need for moving parts, enhancing reliability and reducing complexity.

The spacecraft’s design includes a unique thermal shield composed of three aluminum-honeycomb cones, which protect the sensitive instruments from solar radiation and maintain the necessary low temperatures for infrared observations. This design ensures that SPHEREx can operate efficiently in the harsh environment of space.
