Plane Crash in Copake, NY Claims One Life
A small aircraft carrying six passengers crashed in an open field near Copake, New York, on Saturday, according to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Initial reports indicate that at least one individual has died, confirmed by Columbia County Undersheriff Jacqueline Salvatore during a news briefing.
Details of the Crash
Authorities are investigating the incident, which involved a Mitsubishi MU-2B-40 that was en route to Columbia County Airport in Hudson, NY. The FAA noted that the plane took off from Westchester County Airport shortly after 11:30 a.m. and was scheduled to land at 12:06 p.m. However, tracking data from FlightAware shows a significant deviation from its intended flight path.
According to the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), video evidence revealed that the aircraft was intact before it descended rapidly. The pilot reportedly received a low altitude alert, and attempts by air traffic control to make contact went unanswered. No distress call was recorded during the flight.
Survivors and Victims
During a subsequent press conference on Sunday, NTSB officials stated that all six individuals were recovered from the scene, yet only one person was reported dead. The agency could not confirm details regarding the survivors without local authorities’ input.
The victims comprised family members and partners who had gathered for a holiday celebration. A family statement identified the deceased as:
- Karenna Groff
- Michael Groff (father of Karenna)
- James Santoro (Karenna’s partner)
- Jared Groff (Karenna’s brother)
- Alexia Couyutas Duarte (Jared’s partner)
- Joy Saini (mother of Karenna and Jared, wife of Michael)
Background of the Victims
Joy Saini was recognized as an accomplished pelvic surgeon and founder of Boston Pelvic Health and Wellness. Her husband, Michael Groff, was a neurosurgeon and an experienced pilot, having developed a passion for flying at a young age. In contrast, Karenna Groff achieved significant academic success, earning recognition as the NCAA Woman of the Year in 2022 while studying at MIT. She was further pursuing a degree at NYU Grossman School of Medicine at the time of her passing.
An NYU representative praised her exceptional skills and warmth, stating, “Karenna demonstrated exceptional skill and unwavering passion towards the care of patients and the mission of our institution. We will remember her for her warmth, her grace, her kindness, her outstanding accomplishments, and the pure joy she brought to our community.”
Investigation and Response
The investigation into the cause of the crash remains ongoing, with NTSB officials leading the effort. The crash site is reported to be challenging to access due to muddy terrain. Local law enforcement, New York State Police, and fire department personnel responded to the scene following a 911 call made around noon on the day of the incident.
As investigations continue, officials have urged for patience and understanding as they work to uncover the factors that led to this tragic event.
