Pope Francis Discharged from Hospital After Pneumonia Treatment

Date: March 23, 2025

Pope Francis made a public appearance on Sunday after being hospitalized for five weeks due to a serious case of pneumonia. As he exited the Gemelli Hospital in Rome, the 88-year-old pontiff expressed his gratitude by saying, “Thank you, everyone,” while giving a thumbs up to the crowds that had gathered outside.

The moment was filled with enthusiasm as onlookers chanted “Viva il papa!” and “Papa Francesco!” as he acknowledged their presence from a hospital balcony.

Shortly after his appearance, Pope Francis was transported via motorcade to the nearby St. Mary Major basilica, home to his favorite icon of the Madonna, before heading back to the Vatican. This visit is customary for the Pope after any foreign journey.

Upon his return to the Vatican, the Pope plans to undertake two months of rest and rehabilitation at home, as advised by his medical team.

Health Challenges and Recovery

Pope Francis had been hospitalized since February 14 due to complications from bronchitis, with doctors later diagnosing him with double pneumonia. His recovery period was marked by various health challenges, including respiratory crises and mild kidney failure, which necessitated close medical supervision.

Dr. Sergio Alfieri, the medical director of the Gemelli Hospital, noted that the Pope experienced two critical episodes that jeopardized his life but subsequently made gradual improvements. “He presented two critical episodes during which the Holy Father’s life was in danger,” Dr. Alfieri explained.

Post-discharge, the Pope will continue to receive medication and is expected to rest for at least two months as part of his rehabilitation process.

Support from the Faithful

Despite not being in public view during his recovery, Pope Francis connected with the faithful through a recorded message shared in early March. In this message, his frail voice resonated as he expressed deep appreciation for the prayers and support he received during this challenging period.

Additionally, during his hospitalization, the church celebrated the 12th anniversary of his papacy with a special Mass in his honor.
