DeepSeek: A Challenger in AI Technology

DeepSeek, a newly founded Chinese artificial intelligence company, is rapidly making waves in the U.S. tech landscape. Experts suggest that its groundbreaking technology may rival that of established players such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT, prompting significant shifts in investor sentiment and market valuations.

Market Reaction and Stock Impact

The launch of DeepSeek’s AI app has sent shockwaves across Wall Street, leading to considerable declines in stock prices for some of the industry’s giants. In one day, shares of Nvidia plummeted by 17%, wiping out $600 billion of its market capitalization—marking a historic loss for the company. Other firms, including ASML and Broadcom, saw declines of 6% and 17%, respectively.

The stock market’s response raises concerns about whether the new Chinese technology could diminish demand for Nvidia’s chips and whether tech stocks, buoyed by AI optimism, are presently overvalued. “DeepSeek has taken the market by storm by doing more with less,” remarked Giuseppe Sette, president of AI market research firm Reflexivity.

What is DeepSeek?

Founded in July 2023 by Liang Wenfeng, a Zhejiang University alumnus, DeepSeek is backed by a hedge fund that Liang manages, holding approximately $8 billion in assets. The company reportedly capitalized on a stockpile of Nvidia A100 chips, despite their current restrictions on exports to China, as a foundation for its innovative AI tools.

Recent analyses suggest that DeepSeek has achieved significant breakthroughs in AI functionality, particularly in efficient memory usage and enhanced learning capabilities. However, some skeptics question the chip efficiency within its operations.

Availability and Initial Reception

DeepSeek’s AI app, which is free to use, is accessible through the Apple App Store and the company’s website. It reached the top download spot shortly after its release. However, many new users faced difficulties registering due to what DeepSeek termed “large-scale malicious attacks.” Nonetheless, established users were able to continue using the platform as usual.

Recent technology releases, including a model designed to compete with ChatGPT and Meta’s Llama 3.1, have led to a total reappraisal of the AI landscape. “DeepSeek built the model using reduced capability chips from Nvidia…this has caused major agita for U.S. tech stocks,” noted Wedbush analyst Dan Ives.

Distinct Characteristics of DeepSeek’s AI

DeepSeek utilizes an open-source large language model that features “inference-time computing,” enabling it to activate only the necessary portions of its model for each query. This approach is hailed for its potential cost-effectiveness and energy efficiency. Tech investor Marc Andreessen lauded DeepSeek, stating, “DeepSeek R1 is one of the most amazing and impressive breakthroughs I’ve ever seen.” However, there remains skepticism about whether U.S. enterprises will embrace a Chinese-developed AI infrastructure.

Privacy and Data Concerns

As with other technologies tied to Chinese ownership, concerns around data privacy have surfaced. DeepSeek’s privacy policy states that it collects user data—including personal information and chat history—on servers located in China. This situation mirrors challenges faced by other platforms such as TikTok, which have raised questions about national security implications.

The Future Impact on Major Tech Companies

The emergence of DeepSeek highlights a pressing challenge for established technology firms. Analysts are questioning the sustainability of high tech investments in AI, especially in light of DeepSeek’s more affordable alternative. “The fact that this technology is supposed to take less energy and is more cost-effective than U.S.-based models has U.S. technology investors very concerned,” according to Jay Woods, chief global strategist at Freedom Capital Markets.

On the other hand, some believe the market’s immediate response may be exaggerated, maintaining that the ongoing demand for AI technology will continue to support major players in the sector.

Nvidia’s Perspective

Nvidia, while acknowledging DeepSeek’s achievements, maintains that AI inference still necessitates substantial infrastructure. In a statement, the company praised DeepSeek’s contributions and emphasized the continued need for high-performance computing resources. “DeepSeek’s work illustrates how new models can be created using that technique,” Nvidia stated.
