- German tourist Lucas Sielaff, who traveled to Mexico to see his American fiancée, was apprehended during his return from Tijuana. Authorities accused him of violating his 90-day tourist permit, despite it being only 22 days since his entry. He spent 16 days in custody before being allowed to fly back to Germany at his own cost.
Reflecting on these experiences, Sielaff and other detained travelers expressed confusion and frustration over the lack of clarity concerning the reasons for their detention. “What happened at the border was just blatant abuse of the Border Patrol’s power,” stated Sielaff’s fiancée, Lennon Tyler, in an interview with the Associated Press.

Russell Carey, executive vice president for planning and policy at Brown University, urged the community to “consider postponing or delaying personal travel outside the United States until more information is available from the U.S. Department of State.”
