Massive Protests Erupt in India Over Internet Shutdowns
On August 26, 2024, protests erupted across India following the government’s decision to impose widespread internet shutdowns in regions affected by civil unrest. Critics argued that the shutdowns, aimed at curbing misinformation, violate citizens’ rights to information and free speech.
Human rights groups highlighted that India has implemented more internet shutdowns than any other country in recent years. “This is a draconian measure that disproportionately impacts marginalized communities,” said activist Arundhati Roy.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi defended the move, stating, “We must prioritize national security and social harmony.” However, opposition leaders vowed to challenge the policy in court.
