National Public Health Week 2023 Celebrates Cultural Approaches to Community Wellness

Embracing Culture in the Pursuit of Public Health Equity

From April 3 to April 9, 2023, the American Public Health Association (APHA) led the nation in celebrating National Public Health Week (NPHW) under the theme “Centering and Celebrating Cultures in Health.” This year’s initiative focused on how cultural identity, heritage, and lived experience influence health behaviors, access to care, and health outcomes. By placing culture at the center of public health conversations, the APHA aimed to promote culturally competent care and strengthen community-centered strategies to improve well-being.

National Public Health Week is an annual observance that brings together public health professionals, educators, advocates, and communities to highlight pressing health challenges and celebrate solutions. The 2023 theme underscored a growing recognition that effective health policies must embrace cultural diversity and actively work to reduce disparities rooted in race, ethnicity, language, and socioeconomic status.

A Week of Inclusive Engagement

Throughout the week, organizations across the country—ranging from local health departments to universities and grassroots nonprofits—hosted events tailored to their communities. Activities included:

  • Health fairs and vaccination clinics focused on underserved populations.

  • Webinars and panel discussions featuring Indigenous, Black, Latino, Asian American, and immigrant community leaders sharing culturally responsive health strategies.

  • Youth engagement projects celebrating cultural practices related to nutrition, mental health, and physical activity.

  • Storytelling initiatives that elevated the voices of marginalized groups and emphasized their unique health experiences.

One notable example was a virtual symposium led by the Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (ODPHP), which explored how healthcare systems can integrate cultural humility into medical education and public health programming.

Addressing Health Disparities Through Cultural Competence

The week’s theme also brought attention to the persistent health disparities affecting communities of color, LGBTQ+ individuals, and people with limited English proficiency. These disparities are often compounded by structural inequities such as poverty, discrimination, and lack of access to culturally appropriate care.

By focusing on culturally grounded approaches, NPHW 2023 emphasized the need to:

  • Improve language access services, including multilingual health education materials and interpreters.

  • Train health professionals in cultural competence, empathy, and trauma-informed care.

  • Respect traditional health practices and incorporate them into mainstream care when appropriate.

  • Engage community leaders and trusted messengers in public health campaigns to build trust and boost participation.

Research has shown that healthcare services aligned with patients’ cultural beliefs and values lead to better health outcomes, increased treatment adherence, and stronger patient-provider relationships.

Advancing Equity Through Public Policy

In addition to community engagement, National Public Health Week spotlighted the need for policy solutions that promote health equity. The APHA called on legislators to support initiatives such as:

  • Expanding Medicaid and insurance coverage for low-income populations.

  • Investing in public health infrastructure, especially in rural and historically marginalized communities.

  • Supporting workforce diversity in healthcare and public health sectors.

  • Funding programs that address social determinants of health, such as housing, education, and food security.

By advocating for systemic change, NPHW 2023 highlighted the role of culture not only as a personal identity marker but as a powerful framework for policy reform and collective action.

Looking Forward: Sustaining the Momentum

As National Public Health Week 2023 concluded, participants and organizers emphasized the importance of carrying the week’s lessons forward throughout the year. The APHA encouraged communities to continue engaging in culturally informed health promotion and to support efforts that recognize the value of diversity in shaping a healthier nation.

Through inclusive strategies and sustained investment in culturally competent care, the public health sector can better respond to the evolving needs of a diverse population and work toward a more equitable, resilient, and culturally enriched healthcare landscape.
