No Two Floors Alike: The Carpet Store Story

How a family-owned Iowa business brings elite craftsmanship and custom flooring to every home it touches.
Most people have a story about a flooring project that went sideways. A salesperson who promised the world, a subcontractor who did not know the job, and a finished floor that never quite matched the vision. In Red Oak, Iowa, a small family business has spent nearly two decades proving there is a better way. At The Carpet Store, the person who helps you choose your floor is the same person who measures your home. The person who installs it has studied flooring at a level most professionals never reach. There is no handoff. There is no shortcut.
Craftsmanship in a Small Market
Matt and Denise Riley founded The Carpet Store in 2007. Located at 305 East Reed Street in the heart of Red Oak, the business has grown into one of southwest Iowa's most trusted names in flooring and home remodeling. It did so without a franchise banner, a marketing department, or television commercials. What it offers instead is rare: two people who have staked their reputation on doing the work right.
"We are a small business in a small town. We compete by being better, better prepared, better trained, and more personally invested in the outcome than anyone else in our market," Matt says. That belief shapes every project. Denise guides customers through the showroom with a designer's eye, then visits each home to take measurements herself before a single plank or tile is ordered. Matt brings that same precision into the field.
The result is a level of care that mass-market retailers cannot replicate. "Southwest Iowa deserves the same quality of work that you would find in any major city," Matt says. "That is what we set out to prove in 2007, and that is what we are still proving every day."
The Case for Custom
Every floor The Carpet Store installs is built for one home and one family. No two jobs are the same, and that is by design.
"No two floors are the same. Every home is different, every client is different, and every installation we do reflects that. We do not do cookie cutter," Matt says. Clients are not buying a product off a shelf. They are commissioning a floor made for them alone, measured by hand, selected with intention, and installed with expertise.
The showroom carries one of the most extensive selections in the region. Carpet, hardwood, luxury vinyl, laminate, tile, and natural stone come from industry-leading brands including Mohawk, Anderson Tuftex, Shaw, Dal-Tile, and Pergo. Manufacturer-backed warranties and competitive pricing meet the big box stores head-on, yet the personal attention belongs entirely to a local, family-run business. A shop-at-home service brings samples directly to your door, so you can see exactly how a floor will look in your space before committing.
Denise makes that vision come alive. "Denise doesn't just sell a floor. She helps our clients imagine what their home could feel like. That is a completely different conversation than what you get at a big box store," Matt says.
Elite Expertise Behind Every Installation
Matt's pursuit of knowledge sets The Carpet Store apart nationwide. He holds ten IICRC certifications, including Carpet Cleaning Technician, Carpet Repair and Reinstallation Technician, Water Restoration Technician, Odor Control Technician, Upholstery and Fabric Cleaning Technician, Color Repair Technician, Fire and Smoke Restoration Technician, Health and Safety Technician, Trauma and Crime Scene Technician, and Color Damage Specialist. He also holds three IICRC Journeyman designations: Journeyman Fire and Smoke Restorer, Journeyman Textile Cleaner, and Journeyman Water Restorer.
In December 2026, Matt will complete the final experience requirement to achieve IICRC Master status, having already fulfilled every other credential. That achievement places him among a small, elite group of flooring professionals in the entire country.
"I got certified not because I had to, but because I wanted to truly understand what I was doing. When you know how a floor is supposed to perform, you install it completely differently," Matt says. That knowledge matters underfoot. "Most people do not realize how much goes into a great installation. The floor you see is only part of it. What is underneath, how the subfloor is prepared, how the material is acclimated, all of that matters. We do not skip steps."
Matt is also a State of Iowa Licensed Contractor, and The Carpet Store is an IICRC Certified Firm. When you hire the company, you hire a licensed, certified, nationally credentialed professional who happens to operate out of a small town.
Trust Earned One Floor at a Time
Beyond the showroom, the team handles subfloor repair, carpet repair and re-stretching, and commercial installations. That range has earned the loyalty of families and businesses across Red Oak, Clarinda, Atlantic, Shenandoah, Glenwood, and communities throughout southwest Iowa.
The stories speak for themselves. "We built our dream home outside of Red Oak and knew we wanted something no one else had," recall Jennifer and Tom of Red Oak. "Every room is different and every floor is perfect. Matt's installation was so clean our builder asked us who did the work."
Commercial clients feel the same. "I manage several commercial properties across southwest Iowa, and The Carpet Store is the only flooring company I trust," says Rick, a property manager in Atlantic. "When you need it done right the first time, there is only one call to make."
For Carol in Shenandoah, the difference was personal. "What Matt installed does not look like anything you would find at a big box store. It looks like it was made for my home, because it was."
The Carpet Store is also home to Designs by Denise, a women's clothing boutique operating within the same showroom, a testament to the creativity and entrepreneurial spirit that drives everything the couple does.
A Neighbor Who Takes Your Home Seriously
Matt and Denise are not absentee owners. They are the work. Denise is in your home taking measurements. Matt is on his knees making sure every seam, every transition, and every edge is exactly right. "When I walk into a home, I am not thinking about the next job. I am thinking about this one. This client. This floor. That is the only way to do it right," Matt says.
