Former U.S. Attorney Jessica Aber Found Dead in Alexandria
Authorities in Alexandria, Virginia, reported the death of Jessica Aber, a former federal prosecutor, on Saturday morning. Aber, who served as the U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, was discovered unresponsive at a residence around 9:18 a.m. ET.
Investigating Circumstances of Death
Upon the arrival of officers from the Alexandria Police Department, the 43-year-old Aber was pronounced dead at the scene. The specifics regarding the ownership of the home or who alerted the police remain unclear. The Virginia medical examiner’s office will determine the official cause of death. In light of the situation, local authorities have initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding her passing, as stated by police officials.
Professional Background
Aber was nominated to the role of U.S. Attorney by then-President Joe Biden in August 2021 and received a unanimous confirmation from the Senate shortly thereafter. She held the position for nearly three years, stepping down in January when President Trump began his second term.
Her tenure was marked by significant contributions to the department, and Erik Siebert, her successor, expressed deep sorrow at her passing, calling her “unmatched as a leader, mentor, and prosecutor.” Siebert underscored her irreplaceable nature both as a professional and as a human being, highlighting the profound impact she had during her time in office.
A Legacy of Public Service
Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares also commemorated her legacy, noting her substantial efforts with Ceasefire Virginia, an initiative launched in 2022 aimed at reducing violent crime throughout the state. Miyares stated, “I am saddened to learn of the passing of Jessica Aber, whose career of public service included US Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia and whose work with Ceasefire Virginia saved more lives than we may ever realize.”
Before her appointment as U.S. Attorney, Aber worked in private legal practice and joined the Eastern District of Virginia in 2009. Over the years, she held various positions, including assistant U.S. attorney and deputy chief of the criminal division of the office. In her role as U.S. attorney, she managed a staff of approximately 300 individuals within a district serving around six million residents.
Educational Background
Aber was a Virginia native, having completed her undergraduate studies at the University of Richmond. She earned her law degree from the College of William & Mary in 2006.
