Anthony Espo and Jose Cordero: The Founders of Bad Ass Academy Transforming Lives in Brooklyn

Anthony Espo and Jose Cordero turned a free “boot camp” in the park into Bad Ass Academy, a fitness community transforming lives both physically and mentally.

The journey of Bad Ass Academy is a story of grit, passion, and community. It began not in a gym, but in a local park where two best friends, Anthony Espo and Jose Cordero, shared their love for fitness with anyone willing to take the challenge. What started as a free “boot camp” for a handful of people soon grew to more than 60 participants per class by the end of that summer. That energy and commitment sparked the dream of creating something bigger, something permanent.

“We knew we had something special,” says Espo. “The community we built from the ground up in that park showed us that we could do more. We could create a space that was only class-based, where everyone felt connected and pushed to be their best.” This vision became the foundation of Bad Ass Academy, a gym designed to be much more than a place to work out. For Espo and Cordero, it’s a home away from home, a community that challenges, supports, and inspires each member.

The Founders: Anthony Espo and Jose Cordero

Bad Ass Academy’s story began with two childhood friends, each driven by their personal experiences and a shared passion for helping others.

Anthony Espo, a Brooklyn native, grew up with a love for sports and activity. After taking over his mother’s bike shop, Bay Ridge Bikes, he became deeply involved in the bicycle industry. However, after his mother passed away from cancer in 2009, Espo’s drive for health and fitness intensified. “Losing my mom was a turning point,” he shares. “It made me realize how important physical and mental health is, and how important it is to inspire others to prioritize it.”

This realization led him to co-found Bad Ass Academy in 2013, where his goal was to impact lives on a larger scale. A published author and certified trainer, Espo believes in leading by example. “A great leader shows you how to succeed, not just tells you,” he says. His efforts have earned him recognition on networks such as NBC Sports and YES Network, but his true reward comes from seeing his members’ physical, mental, and emotional growth.

Jose Cordero, also a Brooklyn native, shares a similar story of transformation. Inspired by a childhood encounter with firefighters, he dreamt of becoming one. After achieving his goal and joining the FDNY in 2007, Cordero suffered a serious knee injury that led him on a different path, one that brought him back to his first passion: fitness.

“After my rehab, I realized how much I wanted to help others,” Cordero says. His friendship with Espo led them both to teach free workout classes in the park, ultimately sparking the idea for Bad Ass Academy. “I’m living my dream, doing what I love, helping others, and making an impact,” he says.

A Unique Approach: More Than Just a Gym

Bad Ass Academy is not your typical fitness center. The focus is on functional training that empowers individuals both physically and mentally. What makes it truly special is its emphasis on class-based workouts, creating an environment where members are part of a supportive community. The academy’s team of trainers not only helps clients improve their fitness but also challenges them to grow in other areas of their lives.

“It’s about mental toughness as much as it is about physical strength,” Espo explains. “We want people to come in and leave feeling stronger in every way, whether that’s building muscle, breaking a personal record, or simply becoming more confident in themselves.”

The gym’s foundation is rooted in the belief that a successful fitness journey begins with accountability, support, and encouragement. Members at Bad Ass Academy don’t just have trainers; they have a community of people pushing them to be better each day.
