GMA Ends Era in Times Square After 26 Years, Moves to New Disney HQ

Eric Langford, Senior Correspondent

On June 13, 2025, Good Morning America (GMA) aired its final broadcast from its legendary Times Square studio, closing the curtain on a chapter that spanned more than two decades. The long-running ABC morning show is relocating to the brand-new Robert A. Iger Building at 7 Hudson Square—Disney’s recently completed headquarters in New York City. GMA will officially begin airing from the new location starting Monday, June 16.

Saying Goodbye to a Broadcasting Icon

For 26 years, the street-level studio at 1500 Broadway stood as a centerpiece of American morning television. Its glass façade welcomed millions of viewers and visitors alike, providing an open, vibrant set where fans could watch live segments unfold just steps away from Times Square’s busy sidewalks.

The building’s high-profile location made it a favorite stop for tourists and a dynamic stage for live performances and breaking news coverage. The studio helped distinguish GMA from its rivals with its unique ability to blend journalistic storytelling and fan engagement in real time.

The show’s final broadcast from Times Square was a festive yet emotional occasion. Hosts Robin Roberts, George Stephanopoulos, and Michael Strahan paid tribute to the studio and the people behind the scenes who made each episode possible. Performances by Alicia Keys and the Broadway cast of Hell’s Kitchen added a celebratory flair, while montage clips revisited unforgettable show moments from the past two decades.

A Legacy of Landmark Moments

Over the years, GMA has delivered a rich tapestry of human stories, exclusive interviews, and landmark news coverage. Among its most poignant moments was Robin Roberts’ courageous on-air return following a lifesaving bone marrow transplant, which became a beacon of hope for many viewers battling illness.

The Times Square studio was also the site of numerous viral interviews, musical acts, and breaking news events—from presidential interviews to royal wedding reactions and live hurricane updates. Viewers tuned in not only for the headlines but for the warmth, humor, and humanity that became GMA’s trademark.

The final week of broadcasts from Times Square was packed with tributes and personal reflections. Past and present team members joined to share memories and honor the studio that had become like a second home. Archival footage from celebrity visits, behind-the-scenes laughs, and major news milestones played throughout the week, highlighting the show’s cultural impact.

A Move Into the Future

GMA’s move to Hudson Square signals a strategic shift as part of Disney’s plan to consolidate its New York City operations. The Robert A. Iger Building, a sprawling, state-of-the-art campus, will house key Disney divisions including ABC News and ESPN. The new facility is equipped with modernized studios, advanced broadcasting technology, and sustainable infrastructure that reflects the demands of digital-first media.

This transition is seen as an investment in the future of live television—one that embraces technological innovation while preserving the essence of morning broadcasting.

Viewers can expect an upgraded experience that includes more immersive visuals, flexible stage layouts, and improved production quality. The show’s hosts and editorial team remain unchanged, ensuring consistency in tone, format, and editorial integrity.

What Viewers Can Expect

Despite the physical move, GMA promises that its mission—to deliver informative, entertaining, and uplifting stories—remains the same. Segments familiar to viewers, including pop culture interviews, human interest features, and live outdoor events, will continue from the new space.

The first Hudson Square broadcast on June 16 will offer a behind-the-scenes look at the new set, along with interviews about the show’s evolution and vision for the future. There are also plans to introduce interactive elements through mobile apps and digital streaming platforms, aligning GMA’s offerings with modern viewing habits.

Honoring the Past, Embracing the Future

The final goodbye to Times Square felt both personal and historic. For longtime viewers, the studio symbolized stability in a fast-changing media landscape. Its departure marks the end of an era—but also the beginning of a bold new chapter.

The Hudson Square studio will serve as a new beacon for morning news, powered by the same heart and spirit that made GMA a household name across America.
