An eight-year-old Louisiana girl died after contracting a rare infection caused by Naegleria fowleri, an amoeba found in warm freshwater, according to her family and health officials.

The infection was believed to have been acquired while swimming in Lake Claiborne in northern Louisiana. The Louisiana Department of Health said the state had recorded its first confirmed Naegleria fowleri infection since 2013.
