Patricia Sands: A Passionate Life of Writing, Travel, and Inspiration

"Patricia Sands, award-winning author of women’s fiction, posing in a picturesque alley in the South of France, exuding inspiration and confidence."

At 80, Patricia Sands proves it’s never too late to chase your dreams, her novels, set in the South of France, inspire women to embrace second chances.

Patricia Sands is living proof that age is just a number, and the desire to follow one’s passions can ignite at any stage of life. At 65, when most people might be thinking about slowing down, Patricia became a published author. Now, at 80, she’s the award-winning author of 13 novels, with each one radiating her love for the South of France, a region she calls her “other home.”

Her story is one of resilience, reinvention, and an unshakeable belief that it’s never too late to pursue a dream. In an industry where debuting as an author often happens in one’s twenties or thirties, Patricia has shattered the mold, becoming an inspiration to aspiring writers and women everywhere.

The Power of Starting Over: Patricia’s Journey to Authorship

Patricia’s story is not just about her novels, but about a woman who reinvented herself at a time when many might feel their best years are behind them. Widowed at 43 with two young sons, Patricia faced life’s hurdles head-on, with a mix of heartbreak and resilience. She returned to university and became a teacher before remarrying at 50, blending her life with seven adult children and nine grandchildren. Yet, it wasn’t until her 60s that Patricia began her rather unplanned  journey as an author.

“At 63, I took a leap and began writing in earnest, unaware of the remarkable journey ahead. Over the next 17 years, I have found myself in a constant state of learning—and rewarded beyond measure by connecting with readers and authors of all ages around the world.”

Writing From the Heart: Novels Inspired by Life in the South of France

For Patricia, the South of France is more than just a setting for her novels; it is a place where life, art, and romance come alive. Every year, Patricia spends time in the region, drawing inspiration from its landscapes, culture, and way of life. Her novels are imbued with a sense of place, with the French Riviera’s vibrant scenery serving as the perfect backdrop for her stories about love, second chances, and the courage to take risks.

Her debut novel, The Bridge Club, was an instant success, capturing the hearts of readers with its relatable themes of friendship, life’s challenges, and the strength found in female relationships. Patricia went on to write The Promise of Provence, a novel that launched her Love in Provence series, which was a finalist for the 2013 USA Best Book Award and the 2014 National Indie Excellence Award.

“I wanted my books to reflect the beauty of the South of France and the stories of women who, like me, have had to start over,” says Patricia. “The women in my novels are not perfect, but they are brave, resilient, and, most importantly, they take chances.”

The Appeal of Women’s Fiction and the Power of Female Protagonists

One of the defining features of Patricia’s work is her focus on women over 50, a demographic often underrepresented in fiction. Her novels feature female protagonists who face challenges such as reinvention, new beginnings, and overcoming personal obstacles, all while navigating the complexities of aging.

“The stories of women at this stage in life are incredibly powerful,” Patricia says. “We’ve lived, we’ve learned, and we’re often at a point where we realize we have the power to change our own stories. I want my books to inspire women to take risks, start new adventures, and be unapologetic about their journey.”

This message of empowerment has resonated with readers, many of whom have shared how Patricia’s novels have given them the courage to take bold steps in their own lives.

From Self-Publishing to Traditional Publishing: A New Era in Patricia’s Writing Career

Although Patricia started her writing career as an indie author, Lake Union Publishing signed her to a contract and published her Love in Provence series. Her novel Drawing Lessons was released in 2017 by Lake Union, and it was a finalist for the Somerset Literary Book Award in 2019. But after that,  Patricia returned to indie publishing, where she could set her own pace and release books when she felt ready.

“I enjoy the flexibility of indie publishing,” she shares. “I can decide on my deadlines, choose my cover designs, and really connect with my readers. However there is tremendous benefit in working with a publisher who can take my books to a wider audience. There is something to be said for both worlds.”

Her award-winning works, including The Secrets We Hide (2022), which won the 2023 Book Excellence Award for Women’s Fiction, showcase Patricia’s ability to adapt and grow within the literary world. She continues to break barriers for older women in the writing industry, showing that there’s no expiration date on success.

Her story is a testament to the power of reinvention and the beauty of embracing new opportunities, regardless of age.
