As winners, they were invited to Florida’s Kennedy Space Center, where they had the opportunity to meet NASA scientists and see cutting-edge space technology firsthand.

“The NASA challenge was life-changing for my students,” Engay says. “It gave them a glimpse into the future and showed them that they, too, can be part of solving the world’s most pressing problems.”

Learning Beyond the Textbook

While NASA is often associated with dreams of space, Engay’s students are turning these dreams into reality. By using interactive platforms like Minecraft Education and Biomanbiology, Engay brings science concepts to life in ways that resonate with today’s tech-savvy students. High school students also learn 3D modeling and computer-aided design (CAD) through Onshape, creating their own designs and printing them using state-of-the-art 3D printers.

But Engay doesn’t stop with digital tools; he combines them with traditional hands-on projects like building bridges and testing water quality. This ensures that students engage with science in multiple ways, deepening their understanding of the material.

What truly sets Engay apart is his dedication to every student’s success. Regardless of their background or challenges, he tailors lessons to meet individual needs, including those with IEPs (Individualized Education Plans). Engay firmly believes that all students have the potential to succeed in science, and with the right support, even reluctant learners can thrive.

“Science isn’t hard when you make it relatable and engaging,” Engay explains. “Every student has the potential to be a scientist; they just need the chance to prove it.”

Engay goes beyond classroom instruction to mentor his students, guiding them through difficult projects and encouraging them to reach for greater achievements. For those who need additional support, he ensures they receive personalized attention to help them succeed.

Hands-On Learning Meets Outdoor Exploration

Montana’s vast landscapes serve as an ideal setting for Engay’s curriculum. His students regularly head outdoors for “Outdoor Learning,” studying everything from soil composition to water chemistry. Field trips to local museums, like the Museum of the Rockies in Bozeman and Makoshika State Park, provide students with real-world experiences that enhance their understanding of the natural world.

“These trips help students connect with the material in ways textbooks alone can’t,” Engay says. “When they touch a fossil, collect soil samples, or see rock formations in person, it brings their learning to life.”

Building a Legacy of Innovation

Looking ahead, Engay’s goal is simple: to continue inspiring and empowering his students. His work proves that even in small rural schools, world-class education is achievable. The successes his students have achieved in local, state, and national competitions demonstrate the power of his teaching methods, and his hands-on, experiential approach has made a lasting impact.

“My students aren’t just learning science; they’re learning how to think critically, solve problems, and explore the world with curiosity,” Engay reflects. “That’s the real takeaway for me: watching them grow into confident, capable young scientists ready to take on any challenge.”
