From Janitor to NFL Cheerleader: Miss Dorene

Dorene Lewis turned a stadium mop into a dream fulfilled, then a memoir that inspires thousands.

She weighed two pounds at birth, fighting inside her mother’s womb before she ever saw the world. Decades later, that same fighter would sweep the floors of an NFL stadium, look up at the field, and refuse to believe her dreams ended at the janitor’s closet. This is the story of Dorene Lewis, the woman known to readers everywhere as Miss Dorene.

A Childhood That Should Have Broken Her

Dorene Lewis is a native of Indianapolis, Indiana, and a storyteller in the truest sense. Her memoir, Miss Dorene: God Has Brought Me Too Far and I Can’t Quit Now, is based on a true story, and it is one of the most unusual stories in America.

Her earliest years were marked by hardship most people cannot imagine. She was battered as an infant. She watched her mother endure domestic violence. She was abandoned, left homeless, and forced to overcome a learning disability. For roughly six years, from age eight to thirteen, she was locked away in an attic, off and on, cut off from the childhood every young girl deserves.

What saved her was faith and a flicker of inspiration. She remembered praying the Lord’s Prayer. She watched a movie about the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders on television in the late 1970s, and something inside her lit up. In that darkness, a dream took root. She wanted to become a professional NFL cheerleader, and she held on to that vision with everything she had.

The Janitor Who Made NFL History

Dorene did not begin her journey on the field. She began it with a mop and a bucket. In 1986 and into the early 1990s, she cleaned an NFL football stadium for a living. Night after night, she scrubbed the very ground where her heroes performed.

Then the impossible happened. The woman who cleaned the stadium earned a spot cheering in it. From 1991 to 1998, Dorene cheered for the Indianapolis Colts for seven consecutive years. In doing so, she made history. According to her account, no woman in the NFL organization had ever started as a janitor cleaning a stadium and then risen to become a cheerleader there. She is, as she describes it, the first and only.

The story spread. In August of 1998, her hometown newspaper published a major write-up on her journey, and the news traveled across the United States like wildfire. Along the way, she also performed as an opening act for well-known R&B artists, hip hop artists, and comedians during the late 1980s and early 1990s.

A Prophetic Praise Dancer for Twenty-Five Years

Dorene’s gifts did not stop at the sidelines. For more than twenty-five years, she has served as a prophetic praise dancer, sharing the word of God through movement. Her ministry, the Prophetic Anointing Flow of the Holy Spirit Praise Dance Ministry, has touched audiences and communities alike.

Her work has earned international recognition. From 2021 to 2024, she was honored as the IM H.E.R. International Praise Dancer of the Year. In 2025, she received the She’s the Rock Award. Between 2017 and 2018, she wrote and directed a stage play about her life titled Dance Miss Dorene. Since 2020, she has shared her story on numerous radio and podcast programs, giving listeners a window into her journey from the attic to the arena.

Her recognition continues to grow. In the spring of 2026, Dorene was featured on the cover of Global Success Review Magazine, and she was named a Faith-Based Leader to Watch in Indiana for 2026. She has also been featured in the VIP section of P.O.W.E.R. (Professional Organization of Women of Excellence Recognized) in May of 2025 and again in the spring of 2026, with an additional feature planned for the fall 2026 edition.

A Story Hollywood Noticed

Dorene’s life reads like a screenplay, and industry insiders have taken note. In 2002, a Hollywood director who heard her story called it phenomenal and predicted it would make an amazing movie. In 2018, a former HBO director expressed love for her story and a willingness to film it. That project remains on hold, but Dorene has not stopped pursuing it. Her persistence is, after all, the theme of her entire life.

Her memoir, available now in a Kindle edition, runs one hundred seven pages and blends memoir with self-help. Readers have praised it as inspirational and empowering, celebrating its message of endurance, faith, and redemption. The title itself is a declaration: God has brought her too far, and she cannot quit now.

What Makes Miss Dorene Different

Dorene describes herself as a peculiar person, and she means it as a compliment. She is true to who she is as a child of God. She walks in humbleness, in love, in giving, in serving, and in sharing. She values truthfulness and kindness above applause.

Her guiding scripture is Revelation 12:11, a verse about overcoming through testimony. That is precisely what her book offers readers: a testimony of triumph over trauma. Where others might have surrendered, Dorene transformed her pain into purpose. She took the worst chapters of her early life and rewrote her ending into a real-life Cinderella story, one built not on magic but on faith and relentless determination.

This is what sets her apart. Many people share stories of hardship. Few can point to a journey that carried them from an attic prison to an NFL sideline, from a cleaning crew to an international dance stage, and from silence to the cover of a national magazine. Dorene has lived all of it, and she is still writing new chapters.
