The United States’ tourism sector is enjoying a remarkable resurgence in 2025, as Americans are traveling more than ever before, marking a historic rebound following the pandemic era.

According to new data released today by the U.S. Travel Association (USTA), domestic travel spending has hit a record-breaking $1 trillion in the first quarter of 2025 alone—surpassing the pre-pandemic numbers by more than 10%. With tourism accounting for more than 3% of the nation’s GDP, experts are calling this a pivotal moment for the industry, contributing to both economic growth and job creation across the country.

Record-Setting Trends
Travel experts have pointed to several factors contributing to this surge in domestic tourism. With international travel restrictions relaxed and widespread access to affordable flight options, Americans are rediscovering their country’s vast array of vacation destinations. From sprawling national parks in the West to sunny beach resorts on the East Coast, the appeal of a local getaway has reached new heights.

“The interest in exploring our own backyard is unprecedented,” said Roger Dow, president of the USTA. “People are appreciating the convenience and security of domestic travel while enjoying new experiences close to home. Whether it’s hiking in the Grand Canyon or relaxing in the Hamptons, the U.S. is clearly a top choice for travelers in 2025.”

Hot Spots and Hidden Gems
While traditional tourist hotspots such as New York City, Los Angeles, and Orlando continue to draw millions of visitors, a notable trend is the growing interest in lesser-known destinations. Smaller cities and towns across the Midwest and South are seeing substantial increases in foot traffic, with Nashville, Tennessee, and Asheville, North Carolina, among the most popular choices for weekend getaways.

Local businesses in these smaller locales are benefiting greatly. Many are reporting substantial increases in revenue as tourism injects much-needed capital into the regional economy. Hotels, restaurants, and entertainment venues are thriving, with some even expanding their operations to meet the demand.

Adventure Tourism and Eco-Conscious Travel
A growing segment of travelers in 2025 are seeking outdoor adventures and eco-conscious vacations. National parks like Yellowstone, Yosemite, and Zion have seen a surge in visitors eager to reconnect with nature. Many are participating in guided eco-tours, wildlife safaris, and sustainable travel experiences that promote environmental stewardship.

“There’s a palpable shift in the types of vacations people want. Travelers are becoming increasingly eco-aware,” said Jessica Green, a sustainability expert. “Not only are they seeking to enjoy nature, but they also want to minimize their impact on the environment, from choosing eco-friendly accommodations to supporting local conservation initiatives.”

Economic Impact and Job Creation
The boom in domestic tourism is also having a ripple effect on the job market. The leisure and hospitality sector added more than 200,000 jobs in 2025, with many positions in service industries like tour guides, event coordinators, and hospitality workers seeing rapid growth.

“Tourism-related jobs are offering great opportunities for those seeking employment in the hospitality industry,” said Emily Rivera, a labor market analyst. “These jobs are not only providing immediate relief to local economies but also creating long-term opportunities for career development within the sector.”

The Future of US Tourism
Looking forward, analysts predict that domestic tourism will continue to thrive, bolstered by innovations in travel technology, expanded travel options, and a renewed appreciation for local culture and landscapes. Despite challenges such as inflation and global economic uncertainties, the outlook for the tourism industry remains positive.

“Americans are prioritizing experiences and making up for lost time during the pandemic,” said Maria Lopez, a travel industry consultant. “As long as travelers feel safe, connected, and inspired by their destinations, the demand for domestic tourism will only keep growing.”
